Cabinets can be made to fit into the alcoves on either side of a chimney breast in a living room. These often look good painted plain white, but often people want these made of solid or veneered timber. I always make shelves of solid timber to prevent bowing over time under the weight of books. Shelving can similarly be fitted into alcoves with no apparent supports - 'floating shelves', made by boxing the frame in with veneered board, or of MDF, to be painted.
